7 Signs You’ve Found Truly Unconditional Love

Everyone wants a love that seems right out of a fairy tale — the goosebumps, the butterfly in your tummy, romantic dates, kind of love. What most people forget is that all these are well and good when things are great. But what happens when things go awry, will your love remain or leave you to weather the storm alone?

There’s no better time to know whether what you have is unconditional love than when things go bad. Unconditional love is the type of love that stays irrespective of your condition. It sees you and makes you feel safe enough to show every part of yourself without feeling judged.

This type of love sounds too far-fetched in a world where everything is constantly filtered and edited for social media. You might even miss it if you do not know the signs to watch for. So, in today’s blog, I’ll walk you through the seven signs that you’ve found truly unconditional love.

What Is Unconditional Love?

Simply put, unconditional love is loving someone without any “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts.” It means caring for someone’s happiness and well-being just as much as your own, regardless of what they do, what they have, or how they treat you in a single moment. It is love without expectations.

Unconditional love is not about grand gestures, but the love that stays with you even when the world turns against you. It is exemplified in:

  • Acceptance: You love the person for who they actually are, and not the perfect version of them you’ve made up in your head or they show to the world.
  • Forgiveness: When things get messy or arguments happen, the goal is to fix the problem, not to win or punish the other person. Unconditional love does not count faults.
  • Selflessness: You genuinely want what is best for them, even if it doesn’t directly benefit you. This love is not transactional, and you’re not in it for what you can get.
  • Safety: With unconditional love, you feel safe. You’re not walking on eggshells in order not to offend the other person or living with the fear that they will stop loving you or walk away.

This love does not only happen in movies, and it does not mean you don’t get angry or have to tolerate bad behaviour. Instead, even when you or the other person is angry, you stay respectful. You can also put up boundaries when needed, letting the other person know that loving them unconditionally does not mean they can walk all over you.

7 Signs You’ve Found Truly Unconditional Love

Now that you know what unconditional love is, the following are seven signs that you have found it:

You Can Be Your True Self

The beautiful thing about this type of love is that you don’t feel like you have to wear a mask or pretend to be perfect. Whether you are having a bad hair day, feeling grumpy, or made a mistake at work, you know your partner or loved one will still love you.

You feel safe being exactly who you are. If the person you’re in a relationship with or your friend makes you feel like you have to be anything other than yourself, that is not unconditional love, but conditional love.

They Listen Without Judging

Have you ever seen the saying “We listen, we don’t judge” on social media? That is what unconditional love is: allowing you to make mistakes, share your innermost thoughts and fantasies without feeling judged. The person you share this with will not make you feel small or crazy.

Instead, they will listen to understand you and not find faults. However, note that criticism is not the same as advice. A friend or partner who advises you is not necessarily judgmental. You have to learn to differentiate the two so you don’t confuse sound counsel with judgment.

There Is Always Room to Forgive

Arguments happen in every relationship, but in unconditional love, the goal is to fix the problem, not to win the fight. You both move past mistakes without holding grudges or bringing up the past to hurt each other.

If you find that the person holds grudges, brings up past mistakes at the slightest provocation, and doesn’t stop arguing until they feel they have won, that is not unconditional love. You should reconsider that relationship or friendship.

They Are Happy When You Grow

When someone loves you unconditionally, they always want to see you succeed. They celebrate your big and small wins as if it is thiers. They don’t get jealous when you succeed. Instead, they are your biggest cheerleader. Even if your growth means things change a little, they want what is best for you, not just what is convenient for them.

On the other hand, if they always try to belittle your success, find reasons not to celebrate your wins, or bring up their own achievement when it is supposed to be your moment, that is a red flag you should not ignore.

They Stay When Things Get Tough

No matter how rosy life gets, there will still be challenges. Unconditional love isn’t for the good times only; when life gets hard, the person who has such love for you will always be by your side. They will not run just because you lost your job or suddenly fell ill.

If they do, then know that their love is conditional. Such people tend to return when they see things going well for you. You should set clear boundaries with such people or cut them off completely. Part of self-love is knowing who you should and shouldn’t let into your life.

They Understand Boundaries

As mentioned, unconditional love does not mean not having boundaries. A person who loves you in such a way will know that boundaries are needed and respect them. They will not guilt-trip you just because you said no, and will accept that it is okay to do so.

You Feel a Deep Sense of Peace

If you don’t feel a deep sense of peace when you think about your relationship with a certain person, there is no unconditional love. This type of love brings peace with it; you don’t feel anxious or unnecessarily worried. If it is the opposite, then treat it as a red flag and know the person does not truly have your back.

Final Thoughts

True love in its purest form is meant to be unconditional. It is not boastful, hateful, score-keeping, jealous, or selfish. It is love that withstands everything, stands in the light with you, weather the storms, and holds your hand without ever letting go. If you have this and the seven signs we’ve discussed, read positive, then you have unconditional love. Bask in it, and don’t take it for granted.
